Second Chance Month: Unlocking Potential for Returning Citizens

Each April, we at Spokane Fatherhood Initiative join organizations across America to celebrate Second Chance Month. This observance highlights a troubling reality: 1 in 3 American adults has a criminal record, creating barriers to education, employment, housing, and family reunification.

The challenge returning citizens face

When men and women exit the justice system, they often encounter a second sentence—one not handed down by any court. Society’s barriers to reintegration can be just as punishing as incarceration itself:

  • 80% of employers use background checks that screen out applicants with records
  • 60% of formerly incarcerated individuals remain unemployed one year after release
  • Families experience instability when fathers can’t secure stable housing or employment

The economic impact is staggering

These barriers don’t just affect individuals—they impact our entire community. An estimated $78 billion in economic output is lost annually by excluding people with criminal records from full workforce participation.

More importantly, children suffer when parents can’t successfully reintegrate. Studies show that positive father involvement leads to better academic performance, fewer behavioral problems, and higher self-esteem in children.

How SpoFI makes a difference

Through our Second Chances program, we help formerly incarcerated fathers:

  • Develop essential parenting skills through our 24/7 Dad® classes
  • Connect with employment opportunities and housing resources
  • Build support networks with other fathers facing similar challenges
  • Restore relationships with their children and co-parents

How you can help unlock second chances

  1. Volunteer your time and skills with our reentry mentorship program
  2. Give to fund programs that give fathers the tools to rebuild their lives
  3. Advocate for fair chance hiring practices with local businesses
  4. Spread awareness about the importance of second chances in your community
  5. Host an event at your church

As Garrett, a 24/7 Dad® graduate, shared:

This organization has truly changed the trajectory of my life. From helping me navigate the hard times of being a full-time dad to helping with job connections—the camaraderie built within this nonprofit has been the change I’ve been searching for.

Every person has dignity and potential. This Second Chance Month, join us in creating pathways for returning citizens to become the fathers their children need.
